1854 Voyage on Star of the East:
Charlotte HOCKLEY (HOCKEY) Widow aged 34 years, departed Liverpool 4 Jul 1854, arrived Melbourne 23 Sep 1854 on the Star of the East with her elderly parents Daniel 76 and Ann 76 and her four daughters Charlotte A 13, Eliza 12, Amelia 8 and Sarah 4 yrs. They were all English, Unassisted Passengers.
It is interesting to speculate that the death of a John Hunt (no age stated) in the Sep Qtr 1853 at Shepton Mallet [FreeBMD Vol 5c Pg 334] could be the catalyst for Charlotte to emigrate.

Charlotte came to join her brother Samuel HOCKEY who was living in Geelong and earned her living as a milliner.
In the Geelong Rate Books Samuel HOCKEY had a brickyard in Gertrude Street in 1854-56 and was a storkeeper in Virginia Street in 1858-60.

On Charlotte's death certificate it was stated that she was married in England aged 20 yrs to John HOCKEY. She had lived 42 yrs in Victoria. Charlotte HOCKEY and John HOCKEY woud have been married abt 1838. John's occupation was a CE which we take to be Civil Engineer, Surveyor or the like. A record of this marriage has not been found. There is a marriage of John HOCKEY in 1838 at Yeovil but the spouse is not recorded [FreeBMD Jun Qtr 1838 Vol 10, Pg 941] Also of interest is a John HOCKEY chr 16 Oct 1814 Middle Chinnock, Somerset, England, 3rd of 8 chn of Edmund HOCKEY/Sarah MASSEY (submitted to the IGI, no src info)
