Alfred HOCKEY died 6 Mar 1876 aged 56 yrs bp England, parents unknown [Vic 2118] bur 11 Mar 1876 Glendaruel Cemetery, Wesleyan Methodist (headstone below) An inquest into his death found that he died of 'disease of brain' at Kew [Vic INQ 235/76]

The Somerset Years (1987) Florence Chuk, Pennard Hill Publications, Ballarat, Victoria.
Florence found that Mary PICKFORD and two of her brothers were married on the same day at South Barrow. William aged 22 yrs to Ann BOWDEN of South Barrow and John aged 20 to his cousin Sarah also PICKFORD of Castle Cary. These 3 entries 13, 14, 15 in the South Barrow marriage register are reproduced in the book. Also recorded is information about the assisted immigration of this HOCKEY/PICKFORD family group to Australia on The Lady Kennaway which sailed from Southampton on 9 May 1853 and arrived at Melbourne, Victoria on 15 Aug 1853. Alfred HOCKEY aged 33, Labourer, C of E, literate and Mary HOCKEY aged 28, literate. Alfred and Mary left the immigration depot on 24 Aug 1853 to work for Charles Pitt PYSENT of Wonwondah for 12 mos for £60pa with rations. [Bk9 p250]
Mary A HOCKEY aged 17, Domestic, C of E, Literate, went to work for Mr MICKLE, an auctioneer and pastoral pioneer, of Brunswick South (Melbourne) for an initial term of one month.
John PICKFORD aged 20, Agricultural Labourer, C of E, Literate, and Sarah HOCKEY aged 20, Literate.
William PICKFORD aged 22 Agricultural Labourer, C of E, Literate, and Ann HOCKEY aged 18, literate.
These two couples also went to work for Charles Pitt PYSENT of Wonwondah on the same terms as Alfred and Mary HOCKEY. This sheep property of over 140 000 acres was located abt 15 miles SW of Horsham in the Wimmera.

A year earlier other PICKFORDs from South Barrow were assisted immigrants on the Calphurnia which sailed from London via Plymouth on 30 Dec 1851 and arrived at Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, Victoria on 29 Mar 1852.
Tobias PICKFORD aged 25, Labourer, Independent, Literate and his wife Mary (Ann nee MORGAN) PICKFORD 32 yrs and dau Eliza PICKFORD 6 yrs.
Tobias PICKFORD chr 24 Sep 1826 South Barrow s/o Samuel PICKFORD/Winifred (MARTIN) [p156 SY] Births of children were recorded at Horsham so this family was very likely on the Wonwondah property.
Silas PICKFORD (brother of Tobias) also immigrated to Victoria and worked on his uncle John's property named Yeovil before selecting land at Avon Plains. Samuel PICKFORD (father of Tobias and Silas, and brother of John, William and Mary) also emigrated but returned to England after a short time in the colony. William and Ann PICKFORD settled at Buangor Park near Beaufort. [p245 SY]
