Accidental death of Henry LEWIS
The Creswick Advertiser Wednesday 6th July 1881 A sad accident happened on Monday to a miner named Henry Lewis, who has resided for a number of years at Spring Gully. It appears that Lewis was working with two other miners named Duffy and Shaw in a tunnel at Shicer Hill, the dirt from which was drawn by a horse and truck. There was an incline in the tunnel of between 70 and 80 feet, and then 30 feet of level leading to the face where the unfortunate man was at work. Duffy was driving the horse out the tunnel at the time, and when near the top of the incline the rope broke, and the truck dashed along at a rapid pace and crushed Lewis against the face before he had time to escape. When brought out, the sufferer was taken to the hospital, where, on examination it was found that both his legs were so completely smashed from the knees to the ankles, that amputation was necessary. Every attention is being paid to the unfortunate man, who is reported to be wonderfully well considering his state, although there is very little hope of his surviving. Monday 18th July 1881
