The SCOWN family of John and Susannah SCOWN and their two daughters Elizabeth Jane and Mary Ann arrived Adelaide 13 Dec 1840 on the Royal Admiral.
John SCOWN was a stonemason of Launceston, Cornwall and received free passage under the emigration scheme for the fledgling colony of South Australia which was founded in 1836. This application number 9060, dated 6 July 1840 to Agent J. Geake, embarkation number 4947, was made for John SCOWN, Stone Mason of Launceston, 28 yrs, Wife 32 yrs, female 4 years, female 18 months.

An earlier application number 2739, dated 6 July 1838 was made for John SCOWN, Mason, Launceston, 26 yrs, wife 29 yrs, boy 9 months, girl 1 and 3/4 years, but there was no embarkation number. Before the second application was made their son William Braginton SCOWN died and was buried 13 Jan 1840, aged 2 yrs, St Mary Magdalene Launceston and another daughter Mary Ann had been born 3 Jun 1839 in Launceston, Cornwall.

In 1845 the SCOWN family was living at Willunga where a son John Jnr was born.
John and Elizabeth SCOWN (father and daughter?) were witnesses to the marriage of Sarah BRAGINTON and James BALCHIN at Holy Trinty Anglican Church, Adelaide on 22 Jan 1849 [SA Bk/Pg 3/16]
The discovery of gold in 1851 was followed by mass migration to the goldfields of Central Victoria. Apparently very few able-bodied men resisted the temptation to leave South Australia to seek their fortunes. John SCOWN was collecting supplies in Melbourne to return to the Castlemaine diggings when he met his untimely death.

Death of John SCOWEN
John SCOWN died aged abt 41 yrs on 12 March 1853 in Melbourne. This was before civil registration began in the Colony of Victoria so the record of his death is an early church record of his burial in the Parish of St Paul's Melbourne. John SCOWEN died on the 12 of March and was buried on the 15 March 1853. There are no details of his Abode, Age, Quality or Profession. The ceremony was performed by Louis A Baker by Coroner's Warrant.

An inquest into his death found that John SCOWEN was accidentally killed in consequence of falling from a bullock dray in which he was riding at the time. The off wheel of the dray passing over his body caused so much injury that he expired in a few minutes afterwards. He and his mate, Edward Slater, had been working together at the Mount Alexander diggings. On Saturday evening they had just started with a bullock team from the Crown Hotel for the diggings.
