Eight children of William Nelson ANDREWS and Martha PRICE:

1. Rose ANDREWS b abt 1823 Pensford. (Mentioned in the 1860 letter as having no children, so presumed married.)

2. Elizabeth ANDREWS b 1824/5 Pensford, m Joseph LONGMAN, butcher. In a letter dated 29 Dec 1854 to their daughter Melinda SMITH, George Cox wrote for William and Martha ANDREWS that, "In the first place your sister is married to a man by the name of Joseph Longman and by trade a butcher. They live at Abrychangin, Wales. They are doing very well. They keep market."
In a letter dated 15 Oct 1860, Elizabeth LONGMAN wrote from Pensford to her sister Melinda SMITH in Australia saying that their sister Rose (not yet found, prob the eldest b 1823?), brother William, brother Georgie, nor ourselves had any children, but our brother John had one boy, and brother Langdon was either married or going to be shortly to a nice young woman who is a tayloress. Elizabeth mentioned that their brothers in Bristol all lived within one hundred yards of each other.
Elizabeth and Joseph LONGMAN took over the running of the 'The Lord Nelson' from Elizabeth's parents, probably when Martha became infirm sometime before her death in 1855 until 1884 when the property was sold in acrimonious circumstances.

3. James NELSON chr 26 Mar 1826 St Thomas Pensford s/o William NELSON, Shoe Maker, and Martha NELSON, Abode: St Thomas Pensford. Ceremony performed by James Edward De Visne, Curate. [copy of entry obtained 20 Mar 1884 and displayed on the wall of Nelson House, obtained by Wayne Sinclair]
In a letter dated 29 Dec 1854 to their daughter Melinda SMITH, George Cox wrote for William and Martha ANDREWS that, "Your brother James is still in Bristol, doing very well but not married."

James ANDREWS m 1857 at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, Ellen CORDEAU. [2nd Qtr, Vol 6a, Page 67, FreeBMD] She apparently predeceased James as did their son mentioned in a letter of 1860 from his sister Elizabeth to their sister Melinda.
James ANDREWS aged 47 yrs, Abode: Hotwell Road, Bristol, buried 10 Aug 1873 Bristol General Cemetery. Ceremony performed by J B RIDDLE, Chaplain. Annotation: This is the paper marked D referred to in the annexed declaration of Amelia Beer taken before me this 4th April 1884, W Nickell, Coroner. James left all his property to Richard YANDELL, a law clerk of 1 All Saints Court, Bristol, who subsequently made a successful claim on property including the 'Lord Nelson', thus evicting his sister Elizabeth LONGMAN and her husband. (Nelson House research by Pete Humphries, a former owner)

Melinda ANDREWS m 21 Apr 1850 St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, George SMITH and immigrated to Victoria in 1852. In a letter dated 29 Dec 1854, her parents said, "We was very happy to know that you are so comfortable. We hope by the blessing of God it may continue and the dear children, your little Caroline, God only knows if I shall see her again. ... I have shed hundreds of tears about you and the children. ... What you get, let me beg of you to take care of. It may help you to return if you should want to some day. ... and all that I hope is that you will be able to do a little for yourselves and come home and be happy again, let that be your aim."
George SMITH b 11 Dec 1828 Pensford, Somerset, England, chr 4 Jan 1829 Parish of Publow, Somerset, England s/o George SMITH/Mary FLOWER. (George Jnr was the gr grandson of Thomas SMITH the Elder who was the original owner of property and land in Pensford which included the stone cottages converted to the 'Lord Nelson' beer house.)

5. William ANDREWS chr 8 Aug 1830 St Thomas in Pensford s/o William Nelson, Shoemaker, and Martha. Ceremony performed by James Edward de Visne, Curate. In the side margin is written, 'Mar 26, 1926 James son of Wm & Mary Nelson'. This is confirmation that there was ANDREWS/NELSON confusion about the family surname. [Certificate of Baptism obtained 21 Mar 1884 Stanton Drew, displayed on wall of Nelson House, Church Street, Pensford. Copy provided by Wayne Sinclair 24 Aug 1998]
In a letter dated 29 Dec 1854 to their daughter Melinda SMITH, George Cox wrote for William and Martha ANDREWS that, "We have not heard from your brother Wm since the battle of Alma. He was wounded there and in hospital when he wrote, poor fellow, looking forward for promotion if he should live as he took ammunition on a flag staff from the enemy which was a great act of bravery. He was wounded in the shoulder and lay quite disabled. If he is living he will never be fit for service again."
The Battle of Alma was fought from 20 Sep 1854 to 24 Nov 1854 during the Crimean War in the Ukraine. Could be Pte W. ANDREWS, 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who is listed as wounded in the Northern Times 19 Oct 1864. www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/alma.html
William ANDREWS died 1 Jul 1877, aged 46 yrs, bur Arno's Vale Cemetery, Bristol.

8. John ANDREWS b 1838 Pensford according to 1851 Census, m Harriet.
In a letter dated 15 Oct 1860, Elizabeth LONGMAN wrote to her sister Melinda SMITH in Australia that, "our brother John got one boy and he and his likeness is took together.
