A very big thank you to the Eastman Kodak Company for giving us the grant to buy a digital camera.
We have completed our project as
promised.
The
camera has been used to produce many of the photos for the school website and
for school newsletters.
All students from grades 3-6, about 200 children, have had the opportunity to take, transfer and manipulate digital images on the computer.
Groups of children were tutored by five computer science students from the University of Ballarat who gave 130 hours of
volunteer time during their twice weekly visits to the school over a
period of four months in 1997.
All children had no trouble whatsoever understanding the new technology and were enthusiastic throughout the whole process. They learnt to use the Photo Enhancer software and played with the images by cutting and pasting their heads and body parts and swapping them with their partners.
Despite having little prior knowledge of digital
imaging, many students can now tackle multimedia projects confidently
and expertly. One class used HyperStudio to produce an electronic
year book.
The school now has such a pool of expertise among students and staff that ongoing use of the digital camera is
assured.
These are our friends in Florida, Mary Jo and Lou Terminello.
We are grateful to them because they emailed us the Kodak grant application and urged us to apply in the hope that we could exchange images with our Keypals at Sheridan Hills Elementary School. Indeed we did!
