The Dromedary departed Plymouth, England 11 Sep 1819 and arrived Hobart, VDL 20 Jan 1820. Also on this voyage was John NEWPORT and most likely his wife and four daughters including Elizabeth aged 14 who six years later was to marry Thomas HOWELL.
In the CSO (Colonial Secretary's Office) Index there are references for two letters from a Sarah NEWPORT for one of her daughters to marry a Thomas HARLEY. The letters are dated 22 Sep 1824 and November 1824. This Sarah would appear to the wife of John and mother of Susannah, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary NEWPORT. As both mother Fanny and daughter Sarah were unable to write a scribe would have been engaged on their behalf. Perhaps this is the source of the confusion.
The letters would most likely refer to a proposal of marriage between Elizabeth NEWPORT and Thomas HOWELL who was a convict at the time of the request. Approval was probably not forthcoming at the time as 20 months passed before they married 5 months after the birth of their first child.
