January 30th. An Unusual rush for land took place at the Deniliquin land office last week. A reserve situated in the parishes of Chewar and Cochran was thrown open for selection, and there were eight applicants for the 2700 acres which it contained. The fortunate selector was a man named Robert Gunn, who obtained about 1800 acres of the area, a portion of the balance having fallen to W Faulkes, who owns a large area of land adjoining. About 300 acres of the land was left open, and this latter was secured by Gunn on Thursday (this week) as an additional conditional purchase. This is the fourth year of a low river, and things pastoral are not of the rosiest hue. The Deniliquin Board decided to send Mr W Faulks of 'Cropwell' an amended notice after he informed the Board that half his property was in the Deniliquin District and the other half in the Moulamein District. He had paid the whole of his rate assessment in the former district, and the Moulamein Board now claimed their share. The Secretary of the Deniliquin Hospital wishes to acknowledge, with thanks the receipt of a cheque for £5 from Mr W Faulkes of Cropwell as a donation to the Ordinary Fund. Mr William Faulks, a well-known grazier of the Deniliquin district for over 30 years, has died at his station, Cropwell, in his 78th year. Mr Faulkes came to Australia and worked on the Ballarat Diggings in the early fifties. He went to the Deniliquin district in 1876, selecting on the Werai and Chowai stations, and acquiring adjoining lands, Cropwell now embracing about 20 000 acres.
