Mary A GILES, age 25, arr at Port Phillip in July 1854 as a passenger on the Lightning [Unassisted Immigrants to Victoria, Fiche 072, Page 006] Also on this ship were eight members of the FAULKS family: Robert 35, Mary 30, Elizabeth 12, Thomas 10, John 8, Mary 6, Hannah 4, Sarah 2 and a baby born on board, Mary Ann. They were from Nottingham so quite possibly were related to William FAULKS.

Adele Piper has found that Thomas FAULKS m 22 Dec 1817 Tithy Cum Cropwell Butler, Nottinghamshire, Hannah PORTER. The 1841 British Census showed Thomas FAULKS age 43, born Rutland, England, Wife Ann (Hannah) age 42 and son William age 11. In the 1851 British Census Hannah age 55 was living with her son William age 21 at Cropwell Butler, District of Bingham, Nottinghamshire. (Thomas must have died.) Hannah FAULKS d 1863 aged 86 yrs in Leicestershire.

William FAULKES is shown as the Inn Keeper of the Eureka Hotel on Specimen Hill in the Eureka Road in an 1856 Commercial Directory for Ballarat [p83]. This is in the same location as James Bentley's new £30,000 Eureka Hotel which was burned to the ground on 17 Oct 1854 in the lead up to the Eureka Uprising on 3 Dec 1854.
An 1875 Map of County of Talbot shows William FAULKS as the owner of 6 blocks of land straddling the road between Coghills Creek and Glendaruel Cemetery totalling approximately 322 acres. In 1876 William FAULKS was living at Deniliquin, NSW. He died 25 Sep 1908 in his 78th year on his property, Cropwell, Deniliquin.

"William FAULKS, medium-built and very active; the land attracted him, and, after selling his farm at Ascot (he had built the Eureka (hotel) after the riots), took a large party to open out stations along Burke and Wills' route in 1863, and was remembered in 1879 by a resident there, who enquired of me; his family resided on the south-west corner of Errard and Mair Streets (Ballarat), ending his days at "Cropwell," on Cochrane's Creek, back on the land."
