William Walter GUY was born 16 Jul 1830 Stepney, Middlesex, England s/o William GUY, a Brewery Clerk, and Jane ms YOUNG. When he was baptised three years later on 21 Jul 1833 at St George in the East, Middlesex, his father was described as a Gent and their abode was Lucas Street. [R/N2156]

In the 1841 British Census taken 6/7 June, William Walter GUY, aged 9 yrs, was living in Turner Street, Mile End Old Town Upper, Stepney, Middlesex. Also in the household were his parents, four older sisters, his younger brother and three younger sisters, as well as a 15 yr old servant. [HO 107, Piece 712, Book 6]

In the 1851 British Census taken 30/31 March, William GUY Jnr aged 20, was living at 12 Turner Street, Tower Hamlets, Borough of Stepney, County of Middlesex. Also in the household were his parents, a maiden aunt, his seven sisters and his only brother. [HO 107 folio 1552 piece 231]

William GUY, age 20, arrived 14 Jul 1854 Port Phillip aboard the Red Jacket [Unnassisted passengers to Victoria Fiche/Pg 071/005] This is quite possibly his shipping record although his death certificate indicates an arrival year of 1852 as does his obituary. (I have come to realise that the information on death certificates is less reliable than on marriage or birth certificates.) The passenger list for this voyage shows an overwhelming majority of single young men in their twenties and thirties, no doubt lured by reports in England of the Victorian goldrush which began in September of 1851.

The Red Jacket was a clipper ship, launched 2 Nov 1853 at Rockland Shipyard, Maine. Her dimensions were 250 ft in length, 44 ft wide and draft 26 ft, weighing 2305 tons. In Jan 1854 (11-23) on her maiden voyage she set a record of 13 days, 1 hour and 25 minutes for crossing the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Liverpool which is still an unbeaten time for a commercial sailing vessel. This incredible feat caused a sensation and the Red Jacket was dubbed the 'swiftest clipper of her time', the fastest and finest looking of her class. Chartered by the White Star Line, she sailed from Liverpool, England on 4 May to Melbourne, Australia on 12 Jul 1854, a passage 67 days and 13 hours. Under Captain Samuel Reid, she carried general cargo and 256 immigrants for the Colony of Victoria. What an extraordinary sea journey for an adventurous young man - to traverse the vast deep and blue ocean to a new land on the most technologically advanced ship of the day. On the return journey the cargo was gold from the rich fields of central Victoria.

Obituary in Pitfield Banner and Hollybush Times (Vic. : 1914 - 1918) Saturday 17 March 1917
DISTRICT NEWS, STAFFORDSHIRE REEF, PIONEER PASSES
A colonist of 65 years, Mr. Walter Guy, of Staffordshire Reef, passed away on Sunday at the ripe age of 85 years. Deceased was a native of London, and was attracted to Victoria by the gold fever when 20 years of age. He landed at Port Melbourne in 1852 and shortly afterwards proceeded to Ballarat. After a few years of successful gold mining, he entered upon a carrying business between Geelong and Ballarat. He subsequently joined in the gold rushes at Mt. Misery and Pinchgut, and opened a store at Hockey's Gully. When the rush subsided there, he opened a store at Kangaroo Junction (Berringa), and afterwards took up his abode at Staffordshire Reef, where he has resided ever since. He was a typical pioneer, full of energy and ambition until the last. He was held in high respect, and there was a large gathering at the funeral, which took place on Monday. The remains were interred in the Staffordshire Reef Cemetery, the Rev. J. W. Strickland officiating at the grave. The coffin-bearers were Messrs Geo. Scott, J. Scott, A. Rosewarne and J. Rosewarne. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. and T. Crosthwaite, P. Pola, J. Dew (Drew), C. Rosewarne and L. Cole.
