Birth Record - found 29 Sep 2010
William Walter GUY was the informant for the following certificates:
1855 marriage, his birthplace stated as Chichester, England
1857 birth of dau Emily which gave his birthplace as Chichester, Sussex, England
1861 birth of son Alfred which gave his birthplace as Sussex
1880 birth of dau Florence which gave birthplace as Sussex
His wife Isabella GUY ms HOCKEY was the informant for:
1867 birth of son Walter which gave her husband's native place as London, Middlesex, England
Son Walter was the informant for:
1917 death of William Walter which gave his father's birthplace as London, England
So on balance it seemed that William Walter GUY was born in Chichester, Sussex. However a researcher failed to find the birth of a William Walter GUY in any of the Chichester parishes or surrounding ones and two census records say he was born in Middlesex.

In London William GUY was working as a clerk in a law office. According to a family story he worked his passage to Victoria as a galley hand, which is quite believable as he lived so close to the London Docks on the River Thames. Stepney has an ancient association with the docks and the river. In his early twenties William sailed to Australia and met up with a mate working in the Melbourne office of the gold escort. This contact found William a job on the gold escort from the Ballarat diggings. He became a miner himself and by the time of his marriage in 1855 he was a storekeeper at Kangaroo Flat (later known as Berringa). He was to remain in this area for the rest of his life.
