Whitechapel, St Mary Matfelon in Whitechapel Road, Stepney, Middlesex, was created out of Stepney Parish in 1323. The church was bomb damaged during WW2 in 1940, demolished in 1952 and not rebuilt. The church site and its graveyard is now a public park named Altab Ali, located on the south side of the road, now part of the A11. All that remains is the outline of the church on the ground. Matfelon was the name of the family who sponsored the first chapel which had white walls, thus giving the name of Whitechapel to the area.

Jane (ms YOUNG) was born in Stepney in MSX and so were all the children listed.
There are differences between census ages and known births/christenings of children.
William GUY Snr may have died 1861-1871 in his 70s.
Elizabeth GUY, sister of Wm Snr, may have died 1851-61 in her 60s.

Anchor Brewery In Saint Dunstan's Church there are memorials to members of the Charrington family, famous brewers who owned the Anchor Brewery on the north side of Mile End Road opposite Stepney Green. It is here that William GUY Snr may have been employed as a Brewer's Clerk. The site is now Anchor Retail Park. This image was taken from a webpage by Keith Emmerson in Feb 2008.

In Stepney there were nine hamlets/parishes. The county was known as Middlesex until 1890 when it became the new County of London. The Stepney parishes became part of the Metropolitan Boroughs in 1900 and in 1965 these boroughs became part of the new London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
East of London Family History Society has maps and history of Tower Hamlets. Most records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives, including the burial registers (1841-1966) for City of London and Tower Hamlets (also known as Bow Cemetery). Search Tower Hamlets BDMs (incomplete).
