Service Number 44 Corporal James Robert CORBETT served in WW1 in the Australian Army with the 35th Infantry Battalion. He enlisted 4 Dec 1915 at Newcastle, embarked from Sydney on 1 May 1916 on A24 HMAT Benalla and arrived at Plymouth, England on 9 Jul 1916. He was Killed in Action in the Field in Belgium on 17 Oct 1917 aged 39 yrs. His memorial is at Ypres (Menin Gate), Belgium. His particulars for the Roll of Honour were given by his widow Mrs M Corbett of Ladysmith, West Wallsend, NSW. Birthplace: Ballarat, chiefly connected with West Wallsend, NSW, Calling: Storeman, promoted to Corporal on 8 Jul 1917, KIA at Flanders.
War Pension documents dated 17 Jan 1918 and 2 Feb 1918 shows that his widow Mary G Corbett was to receive £2-12-3 per fornight, her son James Robert £1, and daughter Thelma Grey 15/-. Mary Gray Corbett was the sole benificiary of his husband's will and she was to receive a life insurance payment.
