George SHOEMAKER m 1805 Catherine SMELTZER
George SHOEMAKER was the third of four known sons of Daniel SHOEMAKER and Catherine PIPER (PFEIFER PYPER) who m 1771 Rathkeale, Limerick, Ireland. George SHOEMAKER was born in 1783 at Ballingrane (Townland in Parish of Nantinan) or Rathkeale both in Co Limerick and died in 1849. He married Catherine SMELTZER in 1805 at the Church of Ireland at Rathkeale, County Limerick. Catherine was born abt 1784 d/o Philip SMELTZER 1733-1789, wife's name unknown, memorial erected in Old Nantinan Churchyard, Co Limerick by his son David who was the eldest child by a number of years which may indicate that his father married twice. Catherine also had a sister Agnes who m GROVES and lived in New York State. There was another sister Mary who was married in Ireland and died before their brother Michael. Catherine SHOEMAKER is thought to have died in 1856 at the age of abt 72 yrs in Ireland. She was named in the will of her brother Michael SMELTZER who d 1 Apr 1851 Lodi NY. In the 1851 Census she was living in Lodi, New York, USA and returned to Ireland before 1852. [EW p71] SMELTZER (SCHMELTSER, SMELSER) is also a Palatine surname. Christopher 'STOFFEL MELSERS' came with his wife and 2 chn to Holland in 1709 [Rotterdam Lists HJ p116]
