On 12 Dec 1838, James HOCKEY, Sir Charles Forbes, applied to marry Ann BAREFOOT, Free. Approval was granted on 31 Dec 1839. [1054] James HOOKEY alias HOCKEY, aged 27 years, Ticket of Leave, Butcher, Single Man, and Ann BAREFOOT, aged 18 years, Free, Single Woman, were married 1 Apr 1839 at St John's Church Launceston VDL according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland by Banns with the consent of the Government, by W H BROWNE, Minister, in the presence of James GUNSTON (hisXmark) and William JONES. James signed and Ann made herXmark. [278] This was a second marriage for James HOCKEY whose wife Rachel BAFUE remained in Somerset. Permission for Rachel to be brought to VDL had been refused. Separation by sea for 7 yrs made allowance for a legal re-marriage. 5. However the Launceston Examiner of 22 Dec 1847 reported that James HOCKEY, wife and 3 children; and (his brother) Samuel HOCKEY, wife and child; departed Launceston on the Schooner Will Watch on 20 Dec 1847 for Portland Bay. Deaths in the District of Taradale, Victoria. [Entry No 428, Vic 10338] Daniel James HOCKEY, Farmer aged 64 years, died 29 November 1870 Elphinstone. Cause of death: Dropsy of the whole body, 5 months, last seen by W B ATKIN on 25 Nov 1870. Informant was Daniel James HOCKEY (hisXmark) Son, Elphinstone. Death was registered 29 Nov 1870 at Taradale. John STARR (son-in-law) certified that the burial took place on 30 Nov 1870 at Elphinstone with a Wesleyan minister. Witnesses to the burial were Richard CASSIDY and Henry ALLEN (sons-in-law). It was stated that the deceased was born in Shepton Mallet, parents unknown, had lived about 40 years in Tasmania and 23 years in Victoria and was married in Launceston at 30 years of age to Ann BARFOOT.
Deaths in the District of Kyneton, Victoria. [Vic 13961] Ann HOCKEY Widow, died 9 October 1896 aged 74 yrs Kyneton Hospital d/o Michael BARFOOT/unknown. Cause of death: Exhaustion and Carcinoma of Liver. Informant was Daniel HOCKEY, Son, East Trentham. Death was registered 18 November at Kyneton. C CASSIDY certified that the burial took place 10 October 1896 at Tylden Cemetery. The Roman Catholic service was conducted by Rev EJ Keating. It was stated that the deceased was born in Tasmania, had lived for 24 years in Tasmania and 50 years in Victoria and was married in Tasmania at the age of 17 years to James HOCKEY.
